Year 6 Day 107 Shanghai

We arrived at the Shanghai airport last night at around 2030. We were tired and grumpy from our long wait at the Yichang airport. However, after a good night sleep at our wonderful hotel, the Crown Plaza Shanghai Fundan, we felt much better this morning. After another great buffet breakfast, Leon, our guide while in Shanghai, greeted us and we were off for our day of exploration. Our destination was the city of Suzhou, about 90 km away. Suzhou is known as the city of gardens and we visited two of them today.

The Japanese Tuna Fleet
It is difficult to describe the shear size of the ocean and compare it to the microcosm we see from One World. So, I take note when I see a pattern of observations develop. The pattern is tuna and the Japanese fishing fleet. Over the past 14 days, we have observed 5 different Japanese tuna longliners plying the Pacific Ocean between the Galapagos and the Marquesas. Assuming we observe just a small portion of the fleet in the region, I would guess there must be a hundred or more Japanese fishing vessels working this area. It seems to be a long way to travel to find tuna. Then again, it is a long way for tuna to travel to Green Bay.
